(9:36 pm PT) - Nostalgia Week: Day 2 and 3
[link] - (content)
Actually, I just finished watching tape 3, tape 2 being yesterday. And three tapes in, I can say tape 2 is my least favourite so far. The problem with NEXT is it became rather Lina-centric, even though the series originally started off with a nice group dynamic. You get a glimpse of this change in eps 30-31. Ep 32 is the return of Martina, but actually it wasn't that great humourwise. Don't know why, too much dialogue from Martina, maybe.
So on to tape 3, and one of my favourite eps of the series: the Lake Dragon ep. I said it before and I'll say it again. Poor Zel.
For some reason I noticed something that, while seemingly obvious, I really hadn't thought about the first few times I watched that ep. Of
course Ashford wouldn't have had trouble giving Zel mouth-to-mouth. He did look like the guy's wife, after all.
Eps 34 and 35 reaquaint us with Prince Philionel, and we start to get a clue as to one of the main plots of NEXT. (Though you don't realise it until after you've hit the halfway mark.)
So far, Nostalgia Week is working out well. Though watching the tapes reminds me that I'd better get the DVDs asap.

(2:00 pm PT) - Now that's a way to end a series
[link] - (content)
To: whoever scripted the ending for Get Backers
Re: thank you
Now
that is how an anime should end. Just enough closure so one isn' left hanging, yet open enough to where the viewer can imagine (or fic) that life goes on as we knew it when we first started the series. And, because I skipped the Goddess arc, it works out better for me. In a way, it
is like life goes on for our beloved retrieval specialists.
Now I just have to keep my eyes out for that movie.
And from Get Backers I sail right into Ayatsuri Sakon. If you like mysteries and lovely bish (and considering how I know most of you, that last one's a given), try this series out. It's floating around Bittorrents. If you want it from me, we'll make arrangements, though I only have 1-9, as that's all the Seichi group has out so far. But they said they
will continue it, so I'm keeping an eye out for 10 now.
And now, to either look at the goddess arc, or watch the second arc of Ayatsuri Sakon.
Anime life... is good.

(1:22 pm PT) - In the mail today...

The UPS guy, Joe, has once again delivered manga to my door. Because I am an addict. Obviously he's been doing this a lot, if I know him on a first name basis.
Anyway, he bringith me today: Slayers Premium, GetBackers #2, Gravitation #5, and Demon Diary #1 (after bringing me #2 and #6 ahead of time).
I haven't watched Slayers Premium yet. Saving that for probably this evening.
Demon Diary #1: ... teh
cute! Oh gawd, Raenef is going to kill me with teh cute. Seriously, it looks to be quite entertaining. Poor Eclipse, he's got a lot of work ahead of him if he honestly thinks he's going to turn Raenef into a demon anything, let alone a demon lord.
GetBackers #2: One word: violent. Oh, the dialogue is funny enough, but dude, I don't think Saiyuki is quite as violent as this is turning out to be. That's really all I
can say about it. Not that there's anything
wrong with violent manga. I'd rather read about fictitious murder, if given a choice. But now I'm left with one question until I get #3: what the hell is in that box? Because I'm pretty sure it's not what Ban thinks it is. Something tells me he's going to wish he'd stuck to the cash and the apartment.
Gravitation #5: You know, there's something very refreshing about reading the manga-ka's notes and finding she gets just as annoyed with constant complaints about her work as, say a fanficcer/fanartist. Don't ask me why, but it is. As for the book itself, it flopped my emotions, especially regarding Ryuichi. You will come to loathe and love him within the span of a few pages. Please Murakami-san, don't shred so hard on my emotions like that. Though I suppose that's what makes Gravi so... Gravi.
Now, dearest RightStuf, if you'd kindly send me all the
other stuff I've ordered, (like the reast of Demon Diary, for exampe), I'd be very happy.

(12:02 am PT) - She fixed it, so I guess I'm thankful after all
[link] - (content)
So the mother-unit came in,
late. I was neutral/frosty, I admit. I know why she did it, but it would have been the second T-day ruined in as many years. But, I came out, we talked about the general suckiness of today from both sides. Then, blessed be the woman, she got up and finished the half done dinner she'd left, (after my [insert suitable derogatory word here] sister bribed her to act as her personal driver all day). I'd already done what I could, but certain dishes only she can do well. Afterwards, we sat down, just the two of us, (because, thank the deities, her bf isn't around right now, off visiting his family). And while we ate, we looked at "It's a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving," which she'd missed for a few years now.
In short, we made up for a truly craptacular day in the span of an hour, over dinner and a cartoon.
Must remember, it's really the simple things that can make a person happy.

(10:17 am PT) - Hrn... nah...
[link] - (content)
I suppose today is when most people reflect on the year gone by, thinking of the good and the bad. Hoping the new year will be better, just as good, not as bad, or heaven forbid, worse. It's time to ponder the what-ifs, the highlights, the low points, and things like that.
...well fuck. Not here.
Now that I know I can get manga, pocky, and sushi in nearly the same place, and not travel across the state, do you honestly think I
care about reflections?
Ch', hell no.
Besides, I'm still coming off an entire low
month. The only high point prior to that was proving to myself that I
can write 50,000 words and it somewhat resemble a story.
BTW, anyone want to help me edit that thing and make sound more like a
good story?
In other news, I picked up a very interesting and heart tugging manga. "X-kai" by one Asami Tohjoh (That's how it's spelled on the book. I'm guessing proper spelling and name placement is Toujou Asami). Fortunately, it's short, only 2 volumes, and I saw the second volume at Kinokuniya. Unfortunately, it's terribly obscure. But I hit Mangabonbons and found the basic information. I'd still like to know of what went on between Kai and this kid (Renge I think Kai called him) at the end.
Kai is what Tuxedo Kamen
wishes he could be. Beautiful, stylish, cool, and has a million and one ways of kill you with a flower.
And he doesn't just use roses. Any flower will do. He's also ruthless in how he kills. Nor is he afraid to crossdress if it helps him get to his target.
The plot's a Weiß take off, only it's not a team, it's just Kai. Yes, he
is a florist, but he's far more pretty/effem than any of the WK boys were (not taking into account the Gluhen redesigns. There's beautiful, then there's just girly). Whatever you do, do
not hurt someone he sees as a friend. You won't see another sunset.
With the exception of Renge and the chick that gives Kai the odd assignment or two, the majority of the character designs of those around Kai seem rather plain. Intentional? To play of Kai's odd, extremely effem looks? The art itself is mainly straight forward without being dull. It's given enough to lay out mood, yet keeping the reader centered on the characters.
I'll probably pick up the second volume tomorrow, along with a California roll while I'm there. Heh, life can be good, sometimes.

(6:28 pm PT) - Finally, a nice day...
[link] - (content)
Despite all the bullshit that wanted to keep me from my scheduled rendezvous with Kit and Korax, I still made it, albeit an hour late. And without my brother... whom I'm currently not speaking to. But enough of that. I'll bitch and moan about the god-awful morning
later. For once I have a nice day to post about.
So I'm an hour late when I locate Weller Court. No sign of Kit or Korax. I'm about ready to give them up for a lost cause (I mean, an
hour? That's too long to wait for someone...) But I spy a Kinokuniya bookstore and decide I'll console myself. I'm still vaguely hoping I'll catch sight of them before I go in, but no dice. So in I go.
To see exactly how we did meet up, read
Kit's blournal. She sums it up so nice and humourous.
An esxchange of gifts. I'm not happy with how the clock came out. I want to do it over when I get money. Kit got me a YnM calender and some tankouban. One has Watari on the cover. I'm never opening it.
We shopped in the bookstore, where the majority of my money flew right out the window. That's okay, got lovely Saiyuki and a few other books. Hey, if there's a pretty male on the cover, I'm halfway sold. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to help Korax get a book she wanted. Sorry, Kor.
There's a poster of Gojyo in that store. I'm going to go back and take it hostage.
From there we hit a nice market, where I see Pocky. Many flavours except milk. Bummer. (And what's with this Men's pocky? I'll have you know I eat dark chocolate too...) I bought a box of mousse chocolate. Emphasis on chocolate. At this point it was kind of like hanging out with friends, as though we've done it a dozen times before. Kit was deprived of peach Ramade (sp?) unfortunately. Me, I found suzhi, but was too broke to get it, so I settled for pork curry.
From there they took me to the mall. Well, we were really too broke to do much, so we found a small pastry shop and just sat for a bit. I
wanted shaved ice, but they didn't have any, so I settled for the Pepsi from Hell. I say this because just as I pull out my new Saiyuki tankouban, I manage to knock it over. Fortunately, Korax saved the book.
We looked around a bit more, though we missed looking at what Kit calls the "fake foods." At that point we figured it was time to break. (It
is New Year's Eve. The nuts are loose.) A quick exchange of hugs at my corner, then we go to our respective stops.
Unlike Kit and Korax, nothing extraordinary happened on my ride home. It was actually nice and peaceful. It also made me wish my painting skills were better, because the cloud formations were breathtaking.
And now, things I learned from my short visit to Little Tokyo.
It is expensive. Not as bad as San Francisco, but bad enough.
Kinokuniya will eat your wallet alive and spit the seams out at your feet, then laugh. But you won't care, you'll have manga.
A Japanese-English dictionary is essential when buying anything in the market.
The workers at the market are overly "friendly." Try not to ask them for help if you're not planning on buying anything, or you'll feel guilty.
If you are in a Japanese market, and you see a deep bowl of the local quissine, trust me, it's not that much. What you see is a very nice layer covering a very large bowl of rice.
Pork Curry should only be eaten
hot. It's just gruel otherwise.
I think that's it. I enjoyed myself, and it was cool seeing them. We'll have to do it again, preferrably when that buffet is open (and when I can get some sushi).
